Submit Website to Search Engines

Before you submit your website / URL to the major search engines, Google in particular (over 90% market share), you should check if the following conditions are met:

• The HTML source code of your site should be 100% compatible to the HTML standard of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Only then can the search engine indexing programs read your site correctly. You can use an HTML / XHTML / CSS Validator to support you in the source code review.
• Your site has the correct keyword density and link popularity (other sites already link to it).
• The most important META tags like 'title', 'description' and 'keywords' are interspersed with the right keywords.
• All links on your site work. You can check this fast with an Online Link Checker.
• The SEO guidelines of each search engine are met.

Many companies offer an automated submission of your web pages for a certain amount of money. The search engines dislike this, as it takes a lot of server resources. The addresses for the manual submission of your website to the major search engines / web catalogs can be found below.

With Google, it takes approximately 14 days after submission, until you can find your site with the relevant keywords on the Internet. With Yahoo it can take up to three months, with Bing it may even be longer. For the website submission to Yahoo you will need a Yahoo email account. With the Open Directory Project, you first have to choose a category that fits your site and then propose your URL there.

Submitting your website to the Open Directory Project means that one of their editors will check whether it meets the ODP quality criteria. It may take six months before your site has been included. But then your ranking in Google & Co. will improve considerably. If the site has once been rejected by the ODP, that decision is usually final. You can only ask and hope for reconsideration.
